EDPR inaugurates 580-MW wind complex in Brazil

Renewable energy producer EDP Renovaveis SA (ELI:EDPR) inaugurated on Thursday a 580-MW wind complex in Brazil’s Rio Grande do Norte state.

The complex, the Portuguese firm's largest renewable energy park in the world, is made up of 14 wind farms divided between three smaller clusters -- the 319.2-MW Monte Verde, 79 MW Boqueirao and 180.6 MW Jerusalem.

The entire complex is equipped with 138 turbines, which have been installed in the municipalities of Lajes, Pedra Preta, Pedro Avelino and Caicara do Rio do Vento.

EDPR expects the wind complex to be capable of generating more than 3 TWh per year, or enough to power a city with over 1.5 million inhabitants. It is estimated that the wind farms will help avoid the emission over 1 million tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere annually.

At present, the renewable energy company has more than 7 GW of wind and solar assets in Brazil in different stages of development.
