Wood lands engineering contract for green H2 giga-project in Chile

UK-based consultancy John Wood Group Plc (LON:WG) said today that it has won a contract to provide conceptual engineering for the H2 Magallanes project, a gigawatt-scale green hydrogen and ammonia development that Total Eren is planning to realise in Chile.

Total Eren envisions the project as an opportunity to install 10 GW of wind power to support 8 GW of electrolysis, and build a desalination plant, an ammonia production facility and port facilities to transport the green ammonia to national and international markets. The whole set-up would be located in the commune of San Gregorio, in the southern Chilean region of Magallanes.

The Paris-based independent power producer last year partnered with the University of Magallanes (UMAG) to collaborate on some aspects of the project, and had initiated studies for the development.

Wood said that the scope of its contract covers the development of a complete off-grid integrated energy complex to produce ammonia from green hydrogen. Its studies will provide ground for Total Eren and the UMAG to deliver precise environmental impact assessments and risk analysis surrounding the H2 Magallanes Project, the consultancy added.

Total Eren set the goal to launch the project in 2025 and produce first hydrogen by 2027, according to its earlier announcement.
