Renewables cover 88% of Portugal's power consumption in Jan

Renewable energy plants have produced enough power to meet 88% of Portugal's electricity demand in January 2023, data from grid operator Redes Energeticas Nacionais (REN) shows.

Hydro and wind have had the largest contribution, covering 51% and 28% of the national demand, respectively. Biomass energy followed with a 5% share and solar photovoltaic (PV) with 4%.

REN's data shows that hydropower and solar plants reached new historic highs of injected volumes into the grid this past month, with daily peaks of around 1,400 MW.

Portugal’s non-renewable electricity accounted for the remaining 12%, supplied only by natural gas facilities.

The grid operator noted that the country’s overall electricity consumption was up 4.1% year-on-year, or 3.7% when adjusted for temperature effects and the number of working days, the utility noted.
