Enel Green Power, Saras get H2 IPCEI funds for Sardinian project

Italian utility major Enel SpA (BIT:ENEL) on Thursday announced that its green hydrogen partnership in Sardinia is set to receive a chunk of the EUR-5.2-billion (USD 5.1n) state aid package approved by the European Commission to promote industrial uses of hydrogen.

The SardHy Green Hydrogen alliance, formed by Enel’s renewables unit Enel Green Power and Italian petroleum refiner Saras SpA (BIT:SRS) on the basis of their February 2021 memorandum of understanding, will use the funds to install a 20-MW electrolyser in Sardinia and churn out hydrogen for Saras’ refinery on the island. Their project is one of 35 initiatives submitted by 29 companies from 13 EU member states to secure public funding under the IPCEI Hy2Use programme.

Enel Green Power will supply its renewable energy for the electrolysis process, which the partners will base at the refiner’s Sarroch industrial site in the province of Cagliari. Saras will use the hydrogen to lower the carbon footprint of its refining processes.

SardHy Green Hydrogen was one of four Italian companies to benefit from the IPCEI Hy2Use programme. According to Enel, the four will receive a total of EUR 500 million.
