Romania opens call to award EUR 103.5m for BESS projects

The government of Romania will distribute EUR 103.5 million (USD 109.3m) to back the deployment of commercial and industrial (C&I) battery energy storage systems (BESS) that should go online by 2025.

The funds will be allocated through a public call in which proposals are due by December 28, 2022, the country’s Minister of Energy Virgil Popescu announced last week.

The money will be available for the purchase of system components and equipment for battery storage facilities and for the construction of new systems, all in the form of cost reimbursement. Micro, small or medium-sized enterprises, including start-ups, as well as large corporations will be able to benefit from the financing.

The funding to be disbursed should not exceed EUR 167,000 per installed MWh and EUR 15 million per individual project. One applicant will be able to claim reimbursement only for a single scheme.

Some EUR 79.6 million of the funding package will come from Romania’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP). The remaining amount will be sourced from state funds.

Romania aims to have at least 240 MW/480 MWh of energy storage facilities in operation by the end of 2025.
