NextChem wins pre-FEED job for 500-MW green H2 project in Portugal

NextChem, the green chemistry unit of Italian industrial group Maire Tecnimont SpA (BIT:MT), has won a Pre-FEED engineering services contract from the international consortium developing a 500-MW integrated green hydrogen and ammonia project in Sines, Portugal.

The MadoquaPower2X project consortium has contracted NextChem to provide services related to early studies, technology and process review, modularity and logistics analysis, as well as front-end loading of engineering needed for the permitting and licensing of the project. In short, NextChem will accelerate the licensing and engineering phases of the scheme, as noted by Rogaciano Rebelo, CEO of Madoqua Renewables, which leads the project.

The deal was signed in the presence of Joao Galamba, Portugal’s Secretary of State for Environment and Energy.

MadoquaPower2X involves the addition of 500 MW of electrolysis capacity in the Sines industrial zone to produce 50,000 tonnes of green hydrogen per year, and a green ammonia plant with an annual capacity of up to 500,000 tonnes.

In addition to Madoqua Renewables, the consortium behind the development consists of Dutch energy transition projects developer Power2X and the Energy Transition Fund of Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP).

According to information from April 2022, the project is valued at EUR 1 billion (USD 989m).
