Petronas launches clean energy platform, eyes up to 40 GW of renewables

Malaysian oil and gas company Petroliam Nasional Bhd, better known as Petronas, today said it has set up a new platform that will provide renewable energy, hydrogen and green mobility solutions, and also announced ambitious goals for each segment by 2030.

Dubbed Gentari Sdn Bhd, the new company will broaden the clean energy operations of Petronas, previously run through its New Energy Business. It will be initially active in Malaysia and the Asia Pacific region.

The start-up will focus on the supply, distribution and retail of clean energy through a portfolio of renewable power plants, mostly solar, the capacity of which is planned to reach between 30 GW and 40 GW by the end of the decade. Apart from solar, the target portfolio will also include wind and battery storage. Currently, the entity owns over 1 GWp of solar assets in India and Malaysia.

Additionally, Gentari will aim to supply up to 1.2 million tonnes of low-carbon hydrogen annually, starting with projects in its home country. According to the statement, it is already working on a pipeline of projects in Malaysia and “other prioritised markets” with partners and expects to commission the first batch of schemes in 2025.

In the electric vehicles (EVs) field, the entity will provide green mobility solutions through an existing network of 170 charging stations in India and Malaysia, seeking to gain a 10% market share across key markets in the Asia Pacific.

Petronas aims to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
