Sustainable Marine officially switches on Nova Scotia tidal energy platform

Sustainable Marine has held an event to officially power up its tidal energy platform in Nova Scotia, which is now ready to start commercial operation, becoming the first to supply in-stream tidal power to the grid in Canada.

The event took place on Brier Island in the Bay of Fundy, which has enormous tidal energy resources.

Edinburgh-headquartered Sustainable Marine will use its demonstration system in Grand Passage to gain knowledge to deliver the world’s first floating tidal array at FORCE (Fundy Ocean Research Centre for Energy) in the Minas Passage, Bay of Fundy. It is being supported by CAD 28.5 million (USD 22.2m/EUR 21.2m) in funding from the Canadian government.

“We have the potential to revolutionise the Atlantic power grid entirely by tapping into the resource available to us at the Bay of Fundy and we are committed to working collaboratively with our provincial and federal government partners to ensure alignment and remove barriers so we can accelerate the deployment of these technologies and help to transform the electricity system for the Maritimes and deliver the region’s net-zero vision,” commented Sustainable Marine chief executive Jason Hayman.

Nova Scotia has allocated about 30 MW through demonstration permits and berths at FORCE for tidal energy demonstrations.
