Turkish steel producer Tosyali plans $71 mln rooftop solar project

Turkish green steel producer Tosyali Holding Company plans to deploy a total of 140 MW of solar power generating capacity on top of its facilities by April 2023 at a total cost of $71 million (64.8 million euro).

The company said in a statement it is working with Huawei and local installation services provider SolarApex to implement the project in stages.

According to Tosyali Holding, this is the world’s largest rooftop solar project and it will be executed on an area of 632 square metres (6,803 sq ft). The first phase of the project will involve the installation of 85 MW of solar panels and is expected to be finalised within seven months. Once the rest of the planned capacity is deployed, the solar arrays will be able to generate a total of 250 million kWh of electricity per year.

"As Tosyali Holding, our goal is to bring fossil fuel use to the lowest possible level. In line with this strategy, we will start to use hydrogen as a substitute for fossil fuels in iron and steel production for the first time in Turkey. We will use some of the electricity from the solar power plant we have built for these hydrogen-oriented operations," said Fuat Tosyali, chairman of the board of directors of Tosyalı Holding.
