Sunotec, a solar construction company based in Bulgaria and Germany, said on Friday it is building Bulgaria’s largest solar power plant, a 124-MWp array, at a hilly site in the Verila mountain range, and expects to complete the project by the spring of 2023.
The Verila solar power plant is being installed at 700-1,000 metres above sea level near the town of Dupnitsa, south of Sofia. According to Valentin Gospodinov, country manager for Bulgaria, the location of the solar project is one of the most adventurous in Europe. Once completed, the facility will increase Bulgaria’s solar power generation by 12%. Currently, the country has about 1 GW of overall solar capacity.
Sunotec is handling the engineering, project management, procurement and construction of the facility, which will feature 220,230 modules, 4,305 tonnes of steel structures and 1,126 kilometres (700 miles) of cables. Up to 90 Sunotec employees have been working on building the solar complex since September. The company said this is one of seven projects it is undertaking at the moment in Bulgaria.
“Like many other countries in the EU, Bulgaria needs to dramatically increase its capacity in the renewable energy sector, especially in light of the current climate and energy crises,” commented Sunotec founder and chief executive Kaloyan Velichkov.
