A group of companies from Germany and the United Arab Emirates have signed four partnership contracts and research cooperation for the production, storage and transportation of green hydrogen and its derivatives from the Gulf state to Germany as Europe's largest economy is seeking to speed up the energy transition in the wake of the war in Ukraine.
The partnership deals between the companies were signed during a visit of Germany's economy and climate minister Robert Habeck to the UAE.
The agreements include:
-- Germany's Uniper SE (ETR:UN01), Hydrogenious LOHC, Jera Americas and the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) will explore hydrogen transportation between the UAE and Germany using Hydrogenious’ liquid organic hydrogen carrier (LOHC) technology. The potential scaling of the existing LOHC technology for the transportation of hydrogen will also be studied as part of the project.
-- ADNOC, German copper producer Aurubis AG (ETR:NDA) and energy companies RWE AG (ETR:RWE), Steag and Gewec will work together to explore opportunities in low-carbon and renewable hydrogen derivatives. ADNOC has signed agreements for the first test deliveries of blue ammonia to the German companies.
-- ADNOC and German port operator and logistics company Hamburger Hafen & Logistik AG (ETR:HHFA) have teamed up to support Hamburg’s ambition to become a hydrogen import hub in Germany. The two companies will implement a pilot project to prepare the transport chain for blue ammonia to Germany which is seen as an important step towards imports of green hydrogen in the medium term.
-- Siemens Energy AG (ETR:ENR), Deutsche Lufthansa AG (ETR:LHA), UAE's renewable energy major Masdar and other partners will jointly work on a project for the production of synthetic kerosene to decarbonise the aviation industry. After a successful first phase, the Green Falcon pilot project with 20 MW of electrolysis capacity could be expanded.
-- German research organisation Fraunhofer Society and UAE's Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure have agreed to strengthen the exchange of knowledge in the area of sustainable energy and applied hydrogen technologies. As part of the cooperation, the Fraunhofer Society will provide advice on UAE's national energy strategy and support the creation of research infrastructure.
Under the agreed partnerships, the first hydrogen deliveries to Germany are expected in 2022.
The accelerated expansion of hydrogen supply chains plays a key role in the transition to sustainable energy, said Habeck.
Germany seeks to speed up the transition from natural gas to green hydrogen. Demand for clean hydrogen is estimated to reach up to 3 million tonnes per year by 2030 and exceed 11 million tonnes per year in 2050. A major part of it will be met with imports.
