Renewables specialist Enel Green Power Chile, part of utility group Enel Chile, has inaugurated a 10.8-MW distributed generation (DG) solar farm in the Santiago Metropolitan region, a project it delivered in partnership with Spain-based PV developer IM2 Solar.
The two companies have an agreement that dates back to 2021 to install 75 MW of small-scale solar farms that will operate under a special regulatory framework designed for small DG power plants, or PMGDs as they are known in Chile.
The La Colonia DG solar farm that was just unveiled is a USD-7.7-million (EUR 7.1m) development located close to the Chilean capital, Enel Chile said. It is made up of 23,490 bifacial modules, which are expected to generate 23,550 MWh of electricity per year.
Enel Green Power Chile has 17 projects in its PMGD portfolio, with nine of them connected and eight under construction. The firm plans to continue working alongside IM2 Solar on these types of projects in the coming years, Enel Chile said.
There are about 2,045 MW of PMGD power plants in Chile, according to a June 2022 update by the Chilean energy commission. Over 75% of them are solar PV farms, with the remainder using wind, biomass, water and fossil fuels as a power source.
