Enel Green Power switches on 256-MW solar plant in Brazil

Enel Green Power announced on Thursday it has put into operation the 256-MW Sao Goncalo III solar farm in northeastern Brazil.

The new photovoltaic (PV) farm is the second expansion of the already operational Sao Goncalo solar complex in the state of Piaui, which now has reached an operational capacity of 864 MW.

Enel Green Power said it invested around BRL 870 million (USD 170.5m/EUR 156.5m) in the construction of the new facility. The PV complex is currently the largest of its kind in operation in Latin America as well as Enel's first to use bifacial solar modules in Brazil.

Sao Goncalo III will be capable of generating 597 GWh per year, while the whole complex has an estimated annual production of more than 2 TWh.

The Sao Goncalo solar park started feeding electricity into the grid at the beginning of 2020 with an initial installed capacity of 475 MW and a year later, a further 133 MW was connected to the grid. The construction of the third section of the complex, which has reached commercial operation, was announced in December 2020.

At present, Enel Group has some 5 GW of renewable capacity in Brazil, of which over 2.5 GW are wind, more than 1.2 GW are solar and some 1.3 GW are hydro.
