US DoE gearing up to kick off USD-8bn programme for clean hydrogen hubs

The US Department of Energy (DoE) on Monday signalled its intent to issue a funding opportunity announcement (FOA) for the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law’s USD-8-billion (EUR 7.5bn) programme to establish regional clean hydrogen hubs across the country.

The department released a notice of intent (NOI), with the FOA expected in September or October this year. The USD 8 billion of funding authorised by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law will be spent over five years to support the development of at least four hydrogen hubs. The law calls for at least one hub to demonstrate the production of clean hydrogen from fossil fuels, one from renewable energy and one from nuclear energy.

The hydrogen hubs will be networks of hydrogen producers, consumers and local connective infrastructure.

“Hydrogen energy has the power to slash emissions from multiple carbon-intensive sectors and open a world of economic opportunity to clean energy businesses and workers across the country,” said US Secretary of Energy Jennifer M Granholm.

Supporting hydrogen is part of efforts to achieve the US’ goal of a carbon-free electricity grid by 2035 and net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
