Germany presses ahead with power grid expansion

Germany is making progress in the expansion of the power grid as a route corridor for around 5,000 km (3,107 mi) of power lines was defined by the end of 2022, the Federal Network Agency said.

Of the total, about 700 km were in the federal planning process and 230 km had been approved or had already been built by the end of 2022.

The Bundesnetzagentur, as it is known, is responsible for the approval of 7,300 km out of all 14,000 km of new transmission lines that are planned to be built across Germany to support the integration of more renewable energy.

The power regulator said that the concrete route of the lines within the corridors will be determined in the course of the planning approval process.

The expansion of the power grid is absolutely necessary to achieve the goals of the energy transition. The renewable energy generated in the north of the country must be transported, said the Federal Network Agency's president Klaus Mueller.

The agency pressed ahead with the procedures in 2022 and will continue to accelerate them as every approved kilometre helps to expand the network, Mueller added.
