India put on stream close to 14 GW of solar photovoltaic (PV) capacity in 2022, including roughly 11 GW in the utility-scale sector, new data by consultancy JMK Research shows.
According to the statistics released on Friday, 13,956 MW of Indian solar parks went online in the past year, accounting for a 17.5% increase in new capacity deployments on a yearly basis. A significant improvement was registered in the utility-scale solar sector, where 11,300 MW of plants were switched on, with the total representing a 47% rise in annual terms. By state, the leaders were Rajasthan, Gujarat and Tamil Nadu.
Meanwhile, rooftop PV deployments in 2022 were 42% less than in 2021, mainly due to the decrease in the off-grid and distributed solar markets. A total of 1.9 GW of rooftop installations started generating power in 2022.
The new additions brought India’s cumulative renewable energy capacity to 120.85 GW at end-2022, according to government data. The share of solar in the total renewable power mix was 52%.
India is pursuing a goal of having 450 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030, which includes 280 GW of solar and 140 GW of wind power.
