US renewable fuels company Aemetis Inc (NASDAQ:AMTX) on Monday said it will help power the fights of British Airways and Irish flag carrier Aer Lingus from San Francisco Airport from 2025.
Under an agreement with the airlines’ parent company, International Airlines Group (IAG), Aemetis will supply a total of 78,400 tonnes of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) over a period of seven years.
The US firm will produce the SAF at the Aemetis Carbon Zero plant it is developing in Riverbank, California. The facility will produce SAF and renewable diesel from agricultural waste like orchards and vineyards, combined with renewable vegetable oil and animal fats.
“Sustainable aviation fuel continues to be shown to be a great solution to decarbonize aviation and can be used in existing aircraft engines,” remarked Aemetis chairman and chief executive Eric McAfee. “Our production of SAF in California is supported by the California Low Carbon Fuel Standard, creating new investment and jobs in disadvantaged minority communities in the state,” McAfee added.
Jonathon Counsell, head of sustainability at IAG, said IAG has so far committed USD 865 million in SAF purchases and investments.
