Ballard, Fusion Fuel commission solar-to-green H2 plant in Portugal

Canadian fuel cells company Ballard Power Systems Inc (NASDAQ:BLDP; TSE:BLDP) said on Thursday that it has finalised the interconnection of the H2Evora solar-powered green hydrogen plant to the Portuguese grid alongside hydrogen tech firm Fusion Fuel Green Plc (NASDAQ:HTOO).

It is a demonstration project promoted by Fusion Fuel, which put to work 15 of its HEVO-Solar units -- hydrogen generators combining mini-electrolysers and concentrated photovoltaic (CPV) solar panels. Ballard supplied its 200-kW FCwave fuel cell module to convert green hydrogen from the facility into electricity.

The plant will produce 15 tonnes of green hydrogen per year and enable Fusion Fuel to sell power into the grid during periods of peak demand, Ballard said.

"We are thrilled to finally be able to commission our H2Évora project, Portugal's first fully integrated solar-to-green hydrogen plant,” said Frederico Figueira de Chaves, Co-Head and Chief Financial Officer at Fusion Fuel.

“While this modest facility has effectively been superseded by some of the larger-scale projects we have under development, its value cannot be understated. We can now look forward to H2Evora providing emissions-free power to the grid for many years to come, a demonstration of the flexibility of green hydrogen and our HEVO-Solar solution, particularly considering the protracted energy crisis roiling European markets,” Figueira de Chaves added.
