Belgian consortium Hyoffwind, which develops a 100-MW green hydrogen project of the same name, has added mechanical engineering specialist John Cockerill and construction group Besix to its team of technology partners.
The two newcomers will help with the design and construction of a 25-MW green hydrogen production unit in Zeebrugge as part of the first phase of the project. They were chosen in a tender process involving multiple parties.
The consortium is made up of renewables developer and operator Virya Energy and energy infrastructure group Fluxys. They consider Hyoffwind as the first step towards the development of Flanders and Belgium as a European green hydrogen hub. The two firms launched a feasibility study in 2018 and in late 2021 moved the project to the permit application process, expecting approval by mid-2022.
The developers hope to make the final investment decision (FID) in the course of 2022. However, this milestone is dependent on the granting of subsidies by the Flemish government under the recovery plan.
The project has already received EUR 8 million (USD 9.1m) in strategic ecological aid from the Flemish government and expects a further EUR 23 million under the Flemish recovery plan via the European call for Important Projects of Common European Interest (IPCEI).
