Cummins to boost Belgian electrolyser production to 1 GW

US power solutions company Cummins Inc (NYSE:CMI) will be using the financial backing associated with its recently awarded IPCEI status to expand its PEM electrolyser production capacity in Belgium to 1 GW, it said last week.

As announced in mid-July, Cummins is one of 35 companies that were selected by the European Commission to receive state aid under the Important Projects of Common European Interest (IPCEI) programme. In this case, the initiative is known as IPCEI Hy2Tech and will see up to EUR 5.4 billion (USD 5.37bn) of total state aid provided to the developers of 41 “truly innovative” technology projects concerning the hydrogen value chain.

Cummins will receive funds from Flanders Innovation & Entrepreneurship Agency (VLAIO) to develop a new generation of PEM electrolyser cell stacks for large-scale hydrogen production systems, according to the press release.

In addition to the planned expansion in Belgium, the US company has also increased its electrolyser production capacity in Mississauga, Canada, and is building new 500-MW factories in Spain and China that could be scaled up to 1 GW, as well.
