Borealis to procure more power from 487-MW SeaMade off Belgium

Dutch utility Eneco Groep NV has signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) to supply electricity from the 487-MW SeaMade offshore wind complex in Belgium to Austrian chemicals and fertilisers producer Borealis.

The 10-year deal will see Borealis get around 150 GWh of electricity annually for its operations in Belgium, it said on Wednesday. Power supplies are due to commence in 2024.

SeaMade, consisting of the 235-MW Mermaid and 252-MW Seastar offshore wind projects, was brought online at end-2020. Featuring 58 turbines, the complex is capable of generating 1.8 TWh a year, equivalent to the needs of 500,000 Belgian households. Eneco owns a 12.5% stake in the complex and has an exclusive offtake agreement for its entire output.

In October 2020, Borealis agreed to procure more than 1,000 GWh annually from the 235-MW Mermaid offshore wind farm under its first PPA with Eneco, also with a 10-year term.

The off-take agreements support Borealis’ goal of using renewable power to cover 100% of the electricity consumption at its Polyolefins and Hydrocarbons businesses by 2030. The Austrian polyolefin specialist is also pursuing a company-wide objective to increase the share of renewables in its power mix to 40% and 2025.
