Google, C40 partner on initiative for 24/7 carbon-free energy for cities

In partnership with Google, C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group is launching a programme to help cities around the world run on clean energy all the time.

C40, a network of nearly 100 mayors, said last week its 24/7 Carbon-Free Energy for Cities programme will develop and implement high-impact strategies, practices and tools to support cities in achieving this. London, Copenhagen and Paris will be initial pilot cities.

Google will assist partner cities by sharing its expertise from its work towards a 24/7 carbon-free energy goal. It will contribute data and technology, as well as funding of USD 900,000 (EUR 925,000).

“At Google, we set the goal of operating on 24/7 carbon-free energy by 2030 both to decarbonise our own operations and to accelerate the decarbonisation of electricity grids globally,” noted Caroline Golin, global head of Energy Market Development and Policy at Google.

As part of the programme, cities will examine policy and market reforms that expand access to clean energy. Each initial pilot will target different challenges such as time-matched clean energy procurement for municipal operations, shifting energy consumption to times of day when solar and wind generation is highest, and increasing local clean energy through mini-grids and battery storage.
