Brazilian telecom Vivo inaugurates 2 MW of solar plants in Rio de Janeiro

Brazilian telecommunication company Vivo has inaugurated two distributed generation (DG) solar plants in Rio de Janeiro state with a combined capacity of 2 MW.

Named Quissama 100 and 200, the new facilities consist of 4,800 solar panels in total and are the first of their kind in the Brazilian state. Local energy company Athon Energia was in charge of the construction and will operate the farms.

All the output will be used to supply Vivo's Rio de Janeiro consumer units, including stores, offices and base radio stations, the subsidiary of Spain's Telefonica SA (BME:TEF) said.

This is Vivo's third DG installation in the state after completing a biogas plant last year. The telecom plans to put five more renewable DG facilities in operation in Rio de Janeiro in the upcoming months.

Overall, Vivo plans the switch on 83 DG renewable plants in 25 states and the Federal District. Currently, 19 assets are in operation and most of the remaining projects are seen to be put on stream by mid-2022.

Once all the plants are up and running, Vivo estimates it will produce around 711,000 MWh per year of clean energy, equivalent to the consumption of a town with 320,000 inhabitants, it noted.
