Battolyser to build 1-GW factory for green hydrogen equipment in Rotterdam

Netherlands-based Battolyser Systems is planning to build a factory to manufacture an integrated battery and electrolyser for the production of green hydrogen at the port of Rotterdam with an annual capacity of 1 GW.

The facility that will be located on an industrial site in the Dutch city will produce the so-called Battolyser -- a system combining an electrolyser producing green hydrogen when wind and solar power is available at low prices, and a battery to store the energy and feed it into the grid in case of shortage and when prices are high.

Battolyser Systems is currently in talks with the Dutch government and EU institutions as it seeks to secure the necessary funding for the project. The company needs about EUR 100 million (USD 104.54m) to build the production site as well as new office and laboratory facilities. The site will become also Battolyser Systems’ head office and R&D centre.

A final investment decision is expected to be made in late 2023 and the opening of the facility is planned for the second half of 2024.

The factory will bring the company closer to the commercialisation of the new integrated system and enable its industrial-scale production.

“Companies in the port are already actively working on projects regarding production, imports, shipping, storage and use of green hydrogen. With this factory we add green hydrogen equipment manufacturing to that portfolio,” said Port of Rotterdam's chief executive Allard Castelein.
