GNL Quintero teams up with Acciona, Enagas on green H2 project in Chile

Chilean liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal operator GNL Quintero announced that it has joined forces with two Spanish companies to develop a green hydrogen project in Quintero Bay, in Chile’s region of Valparaiso.

On the Spanish side of the partnership are renewable energy producer Acciona Energia (BME:ANE) and Spain’s gas grid operator Enagas SA (BME:ENG), collaborators on the Green Hysland project in Mallorca and parties in a number of other green hydrogen initiatives in their homeland.

In Chile, the trio will aim to invest around USD 30 million (EUR 25.5m) to realise the Quintero Bay Green Hydrogen project at GNL Quintero’s regasification terminal. The proposed plant would have 10 MW of electrolysis capacity and an annual output of 500 tonnes of green hydrogen, GNL Quintero said.

The plan is to gradually increase production levels depending on the green hydrogen demand in the Quintero Bay area. GNL Quintero said that the goal of the project is to offer a clean and sustainable energy alternative, contribute to the decarbonisation of Chile’s energy mix and the environmental recovery of the bay area’s Puchuncavi and Quintero communities.

The coastal towns of Puchuncavi and Quintero are considered “sacrifice zones”, surrendered in the name of massive industrialisation, which caused immense pollution, environmental degradation and several instances of mass gas poisoning in August 2018. The area is the host to numerous industrial complexes, including coal-fired power plants, chemical plants and oil processing facilities.
