The total global portfolio of offshore wind projects, including operational, under construction and planned schemes, has reached 413 GW, according to research by RenewableUK’s Project Intelligence team.
China has the largest total pipeline of 64.4 GW, closely followed by the UK with 63.2 GW. Third comes the US with a pipeline of 40.5 GW of projects. Sweden and Vietnam round up the top five, with Germany, Ireland, Taiwan and Australia coming in next. The counts include early-development projects that may not all reach construction.
The fully operational offshore wind capacity globally stands at 35.3 GW. The UK remains the leader with 10.4 GW, followed by China with 9.4 GW and Germany with 7.7 GW. The Netherlands has 2.6 GW, Denmark 2.3 GW, Belgium 1.8 GW, Sweden 192 MW, Taiwan 128 MW, Vietnam 99 MW and a further 681 MW are deployed elsewhere.
RenewableUK’s executive director Isabel DiVanna said the industry body’s Offshore Wind Project Intelligence report shows the global appetite to accelerate offshore wind deployment. “It’s especially useful to see where opportunities are arising for offshore wind supply chain companies in the UK to export their knowledge and expertise to new markets,” DiVanna added.
The report was released on Wednesday on the first day of RenewableUK’s annual Global Offshore Wind conference and exhibition in London.
RenewableUK recently said the global pipeline of floating offshore wind projects, from early development stage to fully operational ones, has reached more than 54 GW.
