Amazon.com Inc (NASDAQ:AMZN) will off-take an additional 250 MW of power from the 759-MW Hollandse Kust Noord offshore wind project in Dutch waters under a deal with Shell Energy Europe BV.
The e-commerce giant will start receiving power supplies from the huge complex from 2024, the unit of oil and gas major Royal Dutch Shell Plc (AMS:RDSA) said on Monday. The power purchase agreement (PPA) follows another deal with Dutch utility Eneco that will see Amazon offtake an some 130 MW from the offshore wind park, thus bringing its total power purchasing commitment from the project to 380 MW.

Hollandse Kust Noord is being developed by the CrossWind joint venture (JV) between Shell and Eneco. To be located off the coast of North Holland province, near the town of Egmond aan Zee, the wind farm is expected to be able to generate at least 3.3 TWh of electricity per year, or enough to meet the annual power needs of over 1 million local homes. It will be powered by 69 Siemens Gamesa turbines.
Amazon’s off-take contracts support its pledge to use 100% renewables electricity for its operations by 2025, five years earlier than planned, and become net-zero carbon across its business by 2040. In December, it sealed a 10-year deal with Denmark’s Ørsted to buy power from 250 MW of capacity at the Borkum Riffgrund 3 offshore wind complex in the German North Sea.
