AES Andes launches 61-MWp solar farm in Colombia

Latin American power company AES Andes SA on Friday inaugurated and commissioned its 61-MWp San Fernando solar farm in Colombia.

The project was executed by the company’s subsidiary AES Colombia, which installed over 114,000 bifacial solar panels each of 530 Wp at a site in the municipality of Castilla La Nueva in the Meta department, Santiago, Chile-based AES Andes said.

The San Fernando solar farm will produce electricity for Colombian oil company Ecopetrol SA (NYSE:EC) and its transport and logistics subsidiary Cenit under a power purchase agreement (PPA). The plant will help the off-takers’ operations in the Eastern Plains meet part of their energy demand, the electric utility said.

The San Fernando project is part of AES Andes’ Greentegra strategy, through which the company seeks to reduce its carbon intensity and offer sustainable energy to its customers. AES Andes said it had signed contracts to supply 10.5 TWh of renewable power per year under the Greentegra strategy since May 2018, and incorporated 221 MW of renewables and batteries into its portfolio.

The company is currently building 1,133 MW of renewables.
