Galileo, Hope form JV for 525-MW floating wind project off Italy

Pan-European renewable energy developer Galileo Green Energy GmbH and Italian sector player Hope Group today announced a joint venture (JV) to develop a 525-MW floating wind project in Italian waters.

The Lupiae Maris scheme calls for the construction of an offshore complex off Italy’s southern region of Apulia, in the Southern Adriatic Sea. The plant will be powered by 35 turbines of 15 MW each, installed on floating offshore wind foundations.

Potentially, the proposed wind farm will generate around 1.5 billion kWh of electricity annually, equal to the annual power consumption of more than 500,000 homes.

The JV partners will work to complete the environmental impact studies for the project in the next few months and then submit the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) application. In the first half of 2023, they will kick off a campaign to better assess the available wind resources at the selected site.

“We are convinced that the Lupiae Maris project represents a great opportunity to develop new industrial capabilities and an innovative supply chain, both in Apulia and in the rest of Italy,” said Francesco Dolzani, chairman of Lupiae Maris and Business Development Director of Galileo in Italy.

Galileo noted that Italy is among its key markets for renewable project development in Europe. The company, majority-owned by New Zealand infrastructure investor Infratil Ltd, has a pipeline exceeding 5 GW of wind, solar and energy storage projects.
