Amprion awards EUR 1bn in cable orders for A-Nord link in Germany

German grid operator Amprion GmbH has awarded cable supply contracts worth more than EUR 1 billion (USD 1.1bn) for the 2-GW A-Nord underground cable connection that will run from Emden in Lower Saxony to Osterath in Nordrhein-Westfalen.

Each of Prysmian Powerlink Srl, part of Italy’s Prysmian SpA (BIT:PRY), and Sumitomo Electric Industries Ltd, a unit of Japan-based Sumitomo Electric Industries Ltd (TYO:5802), has won a contract with a value of more than EUR 500 million, the companies announced on Monday.

Prysmian is to design, manufacture, supply, lay, joint, test and commission the high voltage direct current (HVDC) cable system along the entire Northern route of the German Corridor “A” electricity transmission project. The Italian company will provide the insulated cables along with all related accessories and an integrated PRY-CAM monitoring system. It expects construction work to begin in 2023.

Sumitomo Electric’s order is similar and will be executed in partnership with its technology partner Suedkabel GmbH.

The particular power link will transport electricity generated by offshore wind parks in the North Sea to the consumption centres in the Rhineland and the Ruhr area. It is part of the German Corridor “A” electricity transmission project, which also includes the so-called Ultranet section in the south.

“We are delighted to be working with Amprion on this project: the A-Nord project will be one of the main arteries of the German transmission grid, connecting the key generation sites in Northern regions, characterised by many onshore and offshore wind energy sources, to southern regions, especially in west Germany, where more conventional power plant capacities are located,” said Hakan Ozmen, EVP Projects BU, Prysmian Group.
