Ikea UK said today it is offering customers to switch to renewable electricity in partnership with Big Clean Switch, a company that helps people move to renewable power providers.
The partners will use a collective switch model to secure a tariff on 100% renewable electricity that, according to the announcement, could save a typical UK household over GBP 300 (USD 419/EUR 340) a year.
The exclusive tariff is available for a limited period, from March 6 to March 26. Pre-registration starts today and the furniture retailer said that the more people show interest, the better the deal could be. The Big Clean Switch's network of renewable electricity suppliers will then compete to offer a tariff.
The announcement comes after energy regulator Ofgem last week said it is trialling collective switching for people on worst deals.
"At IKEA, our commitment to sustainability goes beyond minimising the impact of our own operations to having a positive impact on the world around us," said Hege Saebjornsen, sustainability manager at Ikea UK.
Globally, Ikea aims to produce as much renewable energy as it consumes by 2020.
