Singapore-based solar cell and panel maker Maxeon Solar Technologies Ltd (NASDAQ:MAXN) today said it has started offering the longest and most comprehensive warranty in the solar industry on its Maxeon Interdigitated Back Contact (IBC) product line, covering product quality, power performance and services for 40 years.
This compares with 12 years of coverage on products combined with a 25-year performance warranty for most solar panels, the SunPower spin-off added. Its IBC products are marketed in most countries outside the US and Canada under the SunPower Maxeon brand.
The new 40-year warranty applies to residential and commercial systems installed on or after January 1, 2022 in select markets in Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA), as well as Australia, Japan and Mexico, with eligibility and terms varying by market.
The manufacturer noted that longer operating life improves the environmental footprint of the technology.
To provide such a lifespan, Maxeon's IBC cell and panel designs eliminate typical solar module failure modes such as hotspots and cell interconnection failures, the company said. Its solar panels offer a minimum warranted output of 98% during their first year of operation and a maximum annual degradation of 0.25% for the next 39 years, or 88.3% warranted power level at the end of 40 years. According to the company, this means Maxeon IBC panels deliver up to 9.5% more power after 40 years than standard solar panels after 25 years.
