OX2 seeks Natura 2000 permit for offshore wind project in Swedish waters

Swedish renewables developer OX2 AB (STO:OX2) on Monday said it has applied for a Natura 2000 permit to be able to construct an offshore wind farm in Kattegat in Sweden’s exclusive economic zone off the coast of Falkenberg and Varberg.

The project, named Galatea-Galene, envisions the erection of up to 101 wind turbines up to 340 metres (1,115 ft) high in two areas -- Galatea, which is located about 25 km (15.5 miles) outside Falkenberg, and Galene about 25 km outside Varberg.

The wind farm is expected to generate about 6 TWh-7 TWh per year, equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of about 1.2 million Swedish households.

“The wind farm would supply a large amount of new Swedish renewable electricity to the southern Sweden where the need is extensive,” noted Hillevi Priscar, OX2 country manager Sweden.

OX2, which develops and sells wind and solar farms, said its permit application includes an environmental impact assessment and is handled by the County Administrative Board of Halland.

Galatea-Galene is part of OX2's 11.1-GW project development portfolio in Sweden.

The construction of wind turbines in Sweden's exclusive economic zone requires a permit from the Swedish government. A separate Natura 2000 permit is needed for activities within the Swedish exclusive economic zone that can affect Natura 2000 areas.
