Plug Power Inc (NASDAQ:PLUG) announced on Tuesday it has received a 1-GW electrolyser supply order from H2 Energy Europe in relation to the latter’s offshore wind-powered hydrogen production project in Denmark.
The US hydrogen technology company will manufacture the electrolysers at its Gigafactory in Rochester, New York and will deliver them for deployment at H2 Energy’s complex in 2024. The start of green hydrogen production is planned for 2025.
The project in question was unveiled in September 2021 by the Danish government. It will enable the production of roughly 100,000 tonnes of green hydrogen per year near Esbjerg for use in the energy and transportation sector in northern Europe. The output is estimated to be enough to cover the fuel demand for about 15,000 heavy-duty vehicles per day.
This is the world’s largest electrolyser order to date, according to Andy Marsh, CEO of Plug.
H2 Energy Europe is a joint venture between commodity trading firm Trafigura Pte Ltd and H2 Energy Holding AG. Two other joint ventures of H2 Energy, one with Hyundai and one with Phillips 66, will respectively supply fleets of heavy-duty fuel cell trucks and build over 250 hydrogen refuelling stations in Denmark, Germany and Austria.
