Portugal-based clean energy business TagEnergy said on Monday that it starting construction of the 49-MW/98-MWh Jamesfield standalone battery energy storage system (BESS) near Abernethy, Scotland, after securing funding from Spanish-owned bank Santander UK Plc (LON:SANB).
The bank contributed GBP 12.5 million (USD 15.2m/EUR 14.1m) towards the initiative.
Jamesfield is a joint venture project with UK-based renewables firm Harmony Energy. TagEnergy has a 60% stake in the development after the acquisition in November 2021.
The BESS will be equipped with a system of Tesla Megapack lithium-ion batteries and Tesla’s Autobidder AI software for real-time trading and control.
The system is expected to start operation in the fourth quarter of 2023. UK renewables developer RES will serve as asset manager.
Jamesfield is the third BESS project for TagEnergy in the UK to reach financial close. The company entered the UK market in 2021. Since then, it commissioned its maiden BESS, the Hawkers Hill Energy Park, in September 2022 and started building its second project, Chapel Farm, in February 2022.
TagEnergy’s UK portfolio is rounded out by announced projects Roaring Hill and Pitkevy in Scotland and Lakeside in North Yorkshire. The capacity of all six projects now adds up to 320 MW/640 MWh.
