HIF Global seeks approval for e-fuel plant in Tasmania

E-fuels multinational HIF Global has filed a notice of intent (NoI) with the Tasmanian Environment Protection Authority (EPA) in an effort to secure approval to build its first low-carbon e-fuels production facility in Australia.

The proposed facility, which would produce e-fuels from captured CO2 and green hydrogen, would be located in north-west Tasmania, some 30 kilometres (18.6 miles) south of the city of Burnie. The company’s subsidiary HIF Asia Pacific plans to install 250 MW of electrolysers at the site, and use biowaste to extract water for the electrolysis process, HIF Global said.

“At full operations, the HIF Tasmania facility is expected to produce up to 100 million litres per year of carbon neutral eFuels, reducing global CO2 emissions by approximately 260,000 tons per year, the equivalent of decarbonising 52,000 cars on the road today,” said HIF Asia Pacific CEO Ignacio Hernandez.

Construction of the HIF Tasmania Carbon Neutral eFuel Facility is planned to start in 2024. Commercial operation is seem in mid-2026.

Some three months ago, HIF Global raised around USD 260 million (EUR 257.5m) from equity investors to fund its e-fuels projects in Chile, the US and Australia. The most advanced of these is the Haru Oni demonstration project in Chile, where HIF Global will produce e-fuels for Porsche AG vehicles.
