Enel Green Power put up 5.1 GW of new renewables in 2021

Enel Green Power built a record 5,120 MW of new renewable energy capacity worldwide in 2021, or 64.8% more compared to 2020 installations, the renewables multinational and part of Italian utility Enel SpA (BIT:ENEL) said on Tuesday.

The latest capacity figure includes the company’s first battery energy storage systems (BESS), totalling 220 MW, which Enel Green Power added to its Lily and Azure Sky Solar plants and the Azure Sky wind farm in the US.

The new capacity is divided between around 70 plants, mostly wind and solar farms, Enel Green Power said. Most of it was installed in Latin America, mainly Brazil and Chile, followed by North America, Europe, and in Africa, Asia and Oceania markets.

The group highlights that it also set a record for renewable power production in 2021, generating around 119 TWh. Of the total output, wind and solar farms produced 55.4 TWh, 9 TWh more than in 2020.

"These results represent a new benchmark for the industry and are once again testament to our global leadership. Indeed, we operate the world’s largest private renewable generation fleet,” said Enel Green Power CEO Salvatore Bernabei.

Following a record-breaking year, Enel Green Power now manages around 54 GW of total renewable energy capacity. Its pipeline of projects under development reaches some 370 GW, including renewables, BESS and capacity already in execution.

On top of last year’s effort, Enel the utility ceased operations of its coal-fired power plants with a total installed capacity of 1,983 MW in Spain and Italy.
