German energy group RWE AG (ETR:RWE) on Friday said it has selected preferred suppliers for the onshore and offshore substations for its 1-GW Thor offshore wind farm in Denmark.
Germany’s Siemens Energy AG (ETR:ENR) will design, build and install the onshore high voltage substation, while Dutch-based HSM Offshore Energy will be tasked with engineering, procurement, construction, installation and commissioning of the offshore substation and its jacket foundation.
RWE has signed early works agreements with both suppliers.
Thor, which will be Denmark’s largest offshore wind farm, will be located about 22 km (13.7 miles) from Thorsminde on the west coast of Jutland. It is scheduled to become fully operational by 2027.
Construction of the onshore substations is expected to start in the spring of 2023. RWE has purchased the land for the substation, has conducted ground conditions and archaeological surveys and has signed grid connection agreement with Danish grid operator Energinet. Siemens Energy will start design works, with the next steps being procurement of main equipment and submission of permit applications.
According to the announcement, HSM Offshore Energy and its engineering subcontractor Iv-Offshore & Energy have created a “highly efficient design” for the Thor substation and its foundation. Their installation is expected in 2025, with commissioning and testing of the offshore substation in 2026.
RWE said the project supports its aim of increasing its global offshore wind capacity from 3 GW to 8 GW by 2030. In Denmark, RWE operates the 207-MW Rodsand 2 offshore wind farm, commissioned in 2010, where it has a 20% stake.
