The US Department of Energy (DoE) on Tuesday launched a funding opportunity that includes USD 40 million (EUR 40.3m) to progress clean hydrogen technologies.
Entitled “Funding Opportunity in Support of the Hydrogen Shot and a University Research Consortium on Grid Resilience,” the initiative also includes USD 20 million for a university research consortium to help states and tribal communities with grid resilience and decarbonisation programmes.
With respect to hydrogen, the department is seeking projects aimed at developing technologies for solar fuels, enhancing hydrogen-emissions detection and monitoring, demonstrating higher-density and lower-pressure hydrogen storage, and improving costs and durability of hydrogen fuel cells for medium- and heavy-duty transport.
The funding opportunity aligns with DoE’s Hydrogen Shot goal of lowering the cost of clean hydrogen to USD 1 per 1 kilogram in 1 decade.
“DoE is laser focused on building a future with cleaner manufacturing, transportation, and electricity — all of which can be achieved with clean hydrogen technology,” said US Secretary of Energy Jennifer M Granholm.
Interested parties can submit concept papers on September 23 and full applications on December 1.
