Suzlon to install 2.1-MW wind turbine for Sanofi India

Aug 6, 2013 - Indian wind turbine maker Suzlon Energy (BOM:532667) will install a 2.1-MW wind turbine for Sanofi India Ltd, part of French pharmaceutical group Sanofi (EPA:SAN), the latter said on Monday.

Under the agreement, Suzlon will build the wind power facility at Sanofi India's production plant in the city of Ankleshwar, Gujarat. The generated electricity will be used for captive consumption at the manufacturing base.

The Ankleshwar facility produces solid dose formulations and active pharma ingredients. Together with another plant in India's western state of Goa, Sanofi manufactures 8.5 billion tablets each year. The Goa factory is equipped with a biomass plant powered by agricultural waste.

Suzlon, which was the second largest wind turbine supplier in India for fiscal 2012/23 with 415 MW of turbines, last week reported a a net loss of INR 10.61 billion (USD 174m/EUR 131m) in its first quarter to June 30, compared with a deficit of INR 8.5 billion a year back. Its financial performance was affected by the exceptional depreciation of the Indian Rupee and one-time expenses related to the restructuring of its German unit REpower Systems, it said. Revenues narrowed to INR 38.96 billion from INR 47.70 billion.
