Weir Minerals Australia to buy renewable energy from Engie

Weir Minerals Australia, a company providing solutions for mining and minerals processing, on Wednesday announced the signing of a power purchase agreement (PPA) for renewable energy with ENGIE Australia & New Zealand (ANZ).

The company will thus “green” operations in New South Wales and Queensland.

Weir did not disclose how much electricity it will be purchasing from Engie, but said it expects to avoid more than 100,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions for the five-year term of the PPA. The deal also brings security of supply, price stability and significant cost savings.

“For the Australian mining sector specifically, renewable PPAs offer price and stability benefits which can underpin and enable investments and the greening of supply chains,” said Andrew Hyland, energy management head at ENGIE ANZ.

Weir has a goal to cut by 50% its carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by 2030 and reach zero by 2050.
