Jun 21, 2013 - US semiconductor company Emcore Corp (NASDAQ:EMKR) said Thursday it had struck a USD-22-million (EUR 16.7m) deal with the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) to deliver multi-junction solar cell assemblies for ISRO's satellite missions.
As part of the contract, Emcore will produce, test and supply the equipment for ISRO's geostationary telecommunications and earth study satellite missions. The US firm expects to use its JTZ and ATJ solar cells, the conversion efficiency of which reaches almost 30%.
During the last 40 years, ISRO has conducted over 65 satellite missions for a range of commercial and scientific purposes. It has been partnering with Emcore for the delivery of photovoltaic (PV) cell equipment during the past 15 years.
Last month Emcore unveiled an order from US aerospace and defence group Alliant Techsystems Inc (NYSE:ATK), or ATK, to design and make solar panels for the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). The equipment will be used to power a NASA satellite for its Green Propellant Infusion Mission (GPIM) project, planned to start in 2015.
