Mombasa Cement to build 36 MW wind power plant

Mombasa Cement Limited (MCL) is planning to build a 36 MW wind farm in Kenya.

The cement producer has announced intentions to build 12 turbines of 3 MW each near the coastal town of Kilifi, some 56 kilometres (35 miles) northeast by road of Mombasa.

According to regulatory filings submitted by MCL, the electricity output of the power plant will be "evacuated via overhead cables to an existing sub-station within Mombasa Cement premises for feeding into the national grid."

In September 2013, Kenya launched a plan to expand its electricity generation capacity from about 1,664 MW to more than 5,000 MW in 2017, diversifying energy sources from hydro and thermal to geothermal, wind and solar.

The move has attracted many local and multinational investors, who are building solar and wind power plants as independent power producers. MCL is the latest addition to the list as it seeks to add revenue from electricity sale to its plans to expand its industrial operations in Kilifi where it already operates a clinker factory that feeds its main plant in Athi River.
