Morocco's cement industry embraces renewable energy

Moroccan cement producers already source about 80% of its energy from renewable energy sources, Mohamed Chaibi, president of the Association of professionals in the cement industry (APC) told a forum held in Casablanca last week.

Energy costs account for 70% to 75% of the variable costs of cement producers, thus energy efficiency becomes a matter of survival and competitiveness for export, Mr. Chaibi noted.

LafargeHolcim Maroc is a bright example of this trend. Three of its industrial production sites use mainly wind energy, up to 85% of the total, thanks to its own wind farm near by. The company has also concluded power purchase contracts with Nareva and Acwa Power to supply renewable power to a total of eight sites in Morocco.
