Wartsila gets order for 50-MW/100-MWh storage project in UK

Finnish technology group Wartsila Corp (HEL:WRT1V) said on Wednesday that it has booked an order to supply its energy storage solution for a 50-MW/100-MWh project in Sundon, Bedfordshire, UK.

EDF Renewables UK and Ireland, part of French energy group EDF SA (EPA:EDF), signed a contract with Wartsila to procure its energy storage system GridSolv Quantum, the energy management system GEMS Digital Energy Platform and a power conversion system. Wartsila will also commission the facility.

The Sundon lithium-ion storage site will be able to store enough electricity to power some 100,000 homes for two hours, according to the Finnish company. It will be used to support electric vehicle (EV) charging and the electrification of public transport, enable the integration of more renewables and balance their intermittency.

The project is based on the Energy Superhub model that EDF Renewables UK, then Pivot Power, previously deployed in Oxford using Wartsila’s technology.

Wartsila’s installed energy storage technology base in the UK now exceeds 424 MWh, the company said.
