German retail chain Netto will spend about EUR 100 million (USD 110.5m) to install rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) systems and heat pumps and replace gas heating at its stores and logistic centres in the home market in a bid to cut reliance on Russian gas and reduce its carbon footprint.
The switch to electric heat pumps will affect nearly 300 Netto stores and logistic centres across Germany and will take place within the next three years, the retailer said on Friday.
Additionally, Netto will gradually set up solar PV systems on the roofs of more than 100 stores and logistic centres by the end of 2028 and will switch to new climate-neutral refrigerators in all its stores across Germany by the end of 2026.
The decision for the investment and the transition to more efficient energy solutions was made as a result of the growing pressure amid increasing electricity prices and the heavy reliance on Russia.
Netto, part of Danish retailer Salling Group A/S, has 342 stores in the states of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Brandenburg, Berlin, Saxony-Anhalt, Saxony, Schleswig-Holstein, Lower Saxony and Hamburg.
