Austrian retailer MPreis commissions 3.2 MW green hydrogen plant

Austrian family-owned retailer MPreis has brought into operation a 3.2-MW plant for the production of green hydrogen in Tyrol that was built as part of an EU project.

The electrolyser, which is located in Voels near Innsbruck, began producing green hydrogen this month, MPreis said earlier this week. The facility was built as part of the EU's Demo4Grid project and will be initially used for demonstration purposes to balance fluctuations in the power grid. Later, the clean fuel will heat the ovens at one of the company's local bakeries.

In May, MPreis will begin the gradual conversion of its fleet of trucks to fuel cell vehicles which will be refuelled at the company's own filling station in Voels. As a first step, three fuel cell trucks will be put on the road to supply the company's local partners.

The 3.2-MW electrolyser was supplied and installed by Sunfire.

The construction of the hydrogen plant cost EUR 13 million (USD 14.4m) and half of the amount was secured through grants.

MPreis operates about 300 stores in Austria with a focus on Tyrol and all of their electricity needs are covered with green electricity from hydropower. The retailer generates also solar power from 22,000 modules that are under its operation.
