Ørsted, ESVAGT order green fuel SOV

Offshore wind major Ørsted A/S (CPH:ORSTED) and offshore wind service operation vessel (SOV) operator ESVAGT have signed an agreement to invest in what they say is the world’s first SOV capable of operating on green fuels.

The vessel, powered by batteries and dual fuel engines, will be able to run on renewable e-methanol, which will be produced from wind energy and biogenic carbon and will be supplied by Ørsted.

The two Danish companies said today their decision to order the new SOV shows their commitment to the decarbonisation of the maritime sector and will help create demand to accelerate cost declines for green fuels. It will also help reduce offshore wind emissions, in line with Ørsted’s goal of reaching carbon-neutrality in its energy generation and own operations by 2025.

ESVAGT will start building the SOV in the second quarter of 2022, with commissioning expected by end-2024. The vessel will then support the 1.3-GW Hornsea 2 offshore wind farm which is currently under construction off the east coast of the UK.
