PKN Orlen lines up Cadeler for Baltic Power turbine installation

Denmark’s Cadeler A/S has secured a reservation contract to transport and install some 70 turbines for the up-to-1.2-GW Baltic Power offshore wind farm in Poland, a joint project of Polish oil refiner PKN Orlen (WSE:PKN) and Canada’s Northland Power In (TSE:NPI).

PKN Orlen said the next steps will be the selection of suppliers of turbines, foundations, internal and export cables, as well as contractors for the offshore and onshore substations and maintenance services.

The project is scheduled to be executed between 2024 and 2026.

“We already have about 650 MW of installed renewable capacities, and we want to rapidly increase this share,” Daniel Obajtek, president of the PKN ORLEN management board said and added that the Baltic Power experience will help the company implement more offshore wind projects.

The final agreement is expected to be inked in the first half of 2023, following a final investment decision for the project.

Cadeler said that the agreement marks its entry into the Polish offshore wind market. It will use one of the two O-class installation vessels, which will have a new and upgraded crane by the start of work for the project.

“The vessel we have booked is one of approximately fifteen in the world capable of installing the latest generation of turbines,” said Jaroslaw Broda, member of the Baltic Power management board.
