Swedish thin-film solar technology specialist Midsummer AB (STO:MIDS) has signed a five-year agreement with Italian roof manufacturer Unimetal to sell it a total of 25 MW of thin-film CIGS modules for the duration of the contract.
Turin-based Unimetal had committed to purchase up to 5 MW of Midsummer modules per year for an annual price of EUR 9 million (USD 10.3m), the Swedish firm said.
The agreement will also see Midsummer buy up to 50,000 square metres (538,200 sq ft) of metal panels from Unimetal for EUR 1.5 million per year for five years.
These quantities are not binding for either party, and the prices may vary under certain conditions, Midsummer said.
As part of the agreement, Unimetal and Midsummer will combine their expertise to jointly launch a new product for the southern European market. The Solar Metal product will merge Unimetal’s metal panels with Midsummer’s modules.
Just in December, Midsummer announced the signing of a similar agreement with Italian metal roofs manufacturer Medacciai. The deals come as Midsummer works to start large-scale production of CIGS thin-film solar panels at its new factory in Bari, southern Italy, by the end of 2022.
“Together with the previous Medacciai deal, the agreement signed with Unimetal fills a considerable portion of the capacity in our new factory even before we have manufactured the first solar cell. The deals prove that the decision to locate the Group’s first megafactory to Italy was the right one,” commented Midsummer CEO Sven Lindstrom.
